Voicing & Action Project - Continuing Conversations

Placemaking and Race through the Stories of East Cleveland Women

Tuesday, November 22 - 11:30 am—12:45 pm

Mather House, 11201 Euclid Avenue, Room 100

Join Dr. Rhonda Y. Williams & Dr. Misty Luminais of the Social Justice Institute for video shorts and  a discussion about how race intersects placemaking in the lives of women from East Cleveland.   Stories are drawn from the Social Justice Institute’s archive of oral histories and focus on the lives of African American women, particularly during the twentieth century, as they and their families move into East Cleveland from right around the corner or from Troy, Alabama. We ask, “How do women make a community their own? How has race shaped the places African Americans call home?” and others. We invite you to be part of the conversation and share your stories as well.

Community Building and Activism through the Eyes of East Cleveland Women

Saturday, December 10 - 3:30—5:00 pm

East Cleveland Public Library, 14101 Euclid Avenue, Lower Auditorium

Join us for the second in a series of community dialogues, featuring video shorts and a discussion about how women of East Cleveland have built community through different strategies. Stories are drawn from the Social Justice Institute’s archive of oral histories and focus on the lives of African American women, particularly during the twentieth century, as they and their families consider what it means to build community. We ask, “How does activism intersect with community building? What forms of activism do women practice?” and other questions. We invite you to be part of the conversation and share your stories as well.

Both events are free and open to the community.  Light refreshments will be served.

These programs were made possible, in part, by Ohio Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
