Join Adrianne M. Crawford Fletcher, PhD, assistant professor, CWRU Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences for a Lunch & Learn Session “Socialized Into Racism: Raising Awareness & Making Changes,” July 13 at 12:30 p.m. in the Tinkham Veale University Center Senior Classroom.
“We are all innocently socialized by our families, our communities, the billboards we see, the news broadcasts we watch, visits to hotels, restaurants and doctor’s offices,” Dr. Fletcher says. “Through these experiences mental maps, schemas and heuristics about the social construction of race become ingrained. Once ingrained, systems of race and oppression are easily wittingly and unwittingly perpetuated.”
At this Diversity 360 Lunch and Learn, participants will interrupt our mental maps, schemas and heuristics in hope of coming to a place of conscientization—”the development of a critical awareness of our own social reality, through reflection and action” Freire (1972).
