Date: Tue. April 18th, 2017, 11:30 am-1:00 pm
Location: Tinkham Veale University Center, Ballroom A
This forum featuring Lisa Thurau, Begun Center Board Member and Executive Director of Strategies for Youth, will highlight multiple efforts undertaken to make systemic improvements in how police officers engage with children and youth since the fatal police shooting of 12-year old Tamir Rice in November, 2014 and the subsequent settlement agreement between the U.S. Department of Justice and the Cleveland Division of Police (CDP). Lisa Thurau, Strategies for Youth (SFY) will be joined by local leaders in law enforcement and community organizations to discuss how this work has evolved. In addition to training on adolescent development and implications for police practices, and educating youth on their encounters with police, the value of community-police partnerships and the importance of law enforcement policy reform to institutionalize effective change will be explored.
