Using Integrated Data to Identify and Protect Children From Educational Risk - a Cleveland Case Study.

On December 13, 2018, The Annie E. Casey Foundation published a new brief by the Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development. Initial results of the research using the combined data were published in 2016.

The case study describes how the Integrated data system (IDS) platform developed by the researchers from the Poverty Center provides a powerful tool to analyze how substandard housing and lead exposure affect children’s school readiness and helps inform policy strategies to better assess risk and prevent lead exposure, thereby improving outcomes for children living in more disadvantaged neighborhoods. The researchers combined data from the Childhood Integrated Longitudinal (CHILD) system with property data from the NECANDO database, which allowed them to identify the connection between housing risk factors, such as poor quality housing and housing instability, exposure to lead and children’s school readiness in the greater Cleveland area. Initial results of the research using the combined data were published in 2016.
