CWRU has recently again been named to two green higher education lists: The Princeton Review’s Green School List and Sierra Club’s Cool School List. This is the sixth year that the CWRU Office for Sustainability has turned in this data collected from a broad group of supporters within various departments throughout campus. The information is submitted as a Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) report to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
This year, CWRU earned a score of 95 out of 99 on the Princeton Review’s Green School List, one point higher than in 2016. A higher percentage of local food purchasing boosted the score. The Sierra Club’s Cool School List ranked CWRU number 94 out of 227 institutions of higher education that participated this year. In 2016, Case Western Reserve ranked 89 out of 201 schools. CWRU’s score was 564.4 this year, three points higher than in 2016. Credits that earned more points included curriculum, innovation, academics, purchasing and transportation. “Suppliers are providing CWRU with greener computers, printers and monitors and better, more comprehensive purchasing data” Stephanie Corbett, CWRU Director of Sustainability, reports. “With our Student Sustainability Ambassadors and community transportation partners, we were able to do a more extensive survey of students, faculty and staff to understand how they commute to campus and move around Greater Cleveland. These surveys gave us a more complete picture, higher transportation score and helped us right size the related greenhouse gas footprint.” She added, “We are also proud to be a part of a rich Ohio higher education sustainability culture, several Ohio schools were ranked and our colleagues do a great job leading green initiatives and sharing best practices with each other.” Find the full Cool School list with scores at the Sierra Club website.
