Both new and veteran faculty alike can encounter challenges with assessment. Join us for a discussion about grading facilitated by Diana Driscoll, lab director and instructor in the Physics Department.
At this session, she will talk about her approaches and invite faculty to share their own strategies and questions.
Topics for discussion are open based on attendees’ specific interests and concerns, but some areas that may be covered include:
- establishing rigorous yet realistic expectations;
- creating assessment measures that respond to course outcomes;
- developing rubrics that allow for accurate assessment;
- providing helpful feedback for students to improve their performance;
- factoring in student effort and/or revision of prior work;
- determining the role of attendance and participation in the final grade;
- finding ways to thoroughly yet efficiently complete grading tasks;
- managing shared grading responsibilities with co-instructors or TAs;
- addressing conflicts and inequitable contributions within group work; and
- handling academic integrity issues.
Attendees will leave this session with new tips and strategies along with a greater understanding of disciplinary similarities and differences in assessment practices.
