Date Released: 29 October 2015
It has been sometimes said that classroom teaching is the indoor equivalent of whitewater rafting: long episodes of quiet calm, interspersed suddenly with an onset of rapids - these are the moments instructors are unprepared for. A student question or demand about grading, a discussion of deadlines or assignments that takes a surprisingly confrontational turn, an allegation of gender or ethnic insensitivity that seems to come out of nowhere. What to do? How should we best handle these moments?
At this UCITE session, we will have a roundtable discussion of ways to handle these and other unexpected moments in the classroom using vignettes of these so-called "Critical Incidents" as our starting point. We also urge faculty to bring along their own "critical incident" stories to add to our discussion.
Please join us for this discussion on Thursday October 29th, 2015.
This session will be held from 12:00 -1:00 pm in the Herrick Room of the Allen Memorial Library Building at the corner of Adelbert and Euclid.
Pizza lunch and sodas will be provided at this session. To help us estimate the amount to order, please let us know if you plan to attend by replying to this email or emailing ucite@case.edu.
