Welcome and Context

UCITE welcomes graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) as valued members of the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) teaching community.

CWRU Departments employ graduate students to assist faculty with instructional tasks such as grading, laboratory instruction, and teaching recitation or course sections. All of these responsibilities are vital to the educational program of the university.

GTAs are required by the Office of the Provost to complete teaching assistant training.  Detailed information is provided in the CWRU Teaching Assistant Policies

Please note: if you are a dual-degree student who is enrolled in an undergraduate program of any kind, you are considered an Undergraduate TA and should follow the guidelines for UTA Training.

Please direct questions about this training to gtatraining@case.edu.

Training Process

Graduate Teaching Assistant training consists of the following THREE steps, all of which must be completed in order to satisfy the UTA training requirement:

STEP 1:  Register for UNIV 400 in the Student Information System (SIS) before the add/drop deadline of February 12, 2021.

STEP 2:  Self-enroll in and complete the Canvas webinar, “Professional Development for Graduate Teaching Assistants”.  Registering for UNIV 400 does not enroll you in the webinar, so the link to the webinar is HERE

STEP 3: Register for and participate in a 90 minute LIVE Zoom session. Registering for UNIV 400 or the webinar does not register you for the Zoom session.

Sessions for the Spring 2021 term will be held on the following dates and times.  All times are in the Eastern U.S. Time Zone:

  • Monday, January 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, January 27 from 7:00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 3 from 12:00 p.m.  to 1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, February 11 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Register for one of the LIVE Zoom sessions using this form.  Zoom links will be emailed to registered students before each session.

International Students Serving as GTAs

If you are an International Student who will be serving as a teaching assistant, you are required to complete the Spoken English Test (SET) .  Please email Dr. Elise Geither at ejg65@case.edu to schedule this test before February 10, 2021.

The test takes about 20 minutes, and your results will be shared immediately following the test.

COVID-19 Information for GTAs trained prior to Fall 2020
