So you've been appointed as a graduate TA, now what?
If you attended GTA training in Fall 2021 or you will attend in Spring 2022, your training will be out of date on August 2, 2024 (at the end of the Summer 2024 term).
If you attended GTA training in Fall 2020 or Spring 2021, your training will be out of date on August 3, 2023 (at the end of the Summer 2023 term).
If you attended GTA training in Fall 2019 or Spring 2020, your training will be out of date on August 1, 2022 (at the end of the Summer 2022 term).
If you attended GTA training prior to Fall 2019, your training is out of date. You will need to complete a Canvas module to update your training, but you do not need to attend the in-person training. Contact email@example.com for access to this Canvas module.
Welcome to Graduate TA Training
Welcome to the teaching community of Case Western Reserve University! As a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), you are a valued member of our teaching community, and we are committed to supporting you in this role.
Graduate Teaching Assistants at CWRU typically assist faculty with instructional tasks such as grading, leading labs, and/or teaching recitation or course sections. The aim of this training is to support you as you perform these duties.
GTA training for Fall 2022 will include asynchronous training through Canvas and a synchronous Zoom seminar with the Mentor TA team.
GTAs are required by the Office of the Provost to complete teaching assistant training. Detailed information is provided in the CWRU Teaching Assistant Policies.
Please note: if you are a dual-degree student who is enrolled in an undergraduate program of any kind, you are considered an Undergraduate TA and should follow the guidelines for UTA Training.

Graduate Teaching Assistant training consists of the following THREE steps, all of which must be completed in order to satisfy the GTA training requirement:
STEP 1: Register for UNIV 400 in the Student Information System (SIS), starting July 18, 2022, and no later than the add/drop deadline for the semester in which you will begin your TA duties.
STEP 2: Complete the UNIV 400 Professional Development for Graduate Teaching Assistants webinar on Canvas within two weeks of the start of the semester in which you will start your TA duties. This course will be activated on July 18, 2022. Registered students will be able to search for it on Canvas on that date; if you have any problems, please contact email@example.com. This step must be completed prior to beginning STEP 3.
STEP 3: Register for and complete an in-person seminar in which the principles covered in canvas will be unpacked in more detail through discussion and active learning exercises. Use this form to register for the 3-hour seminar, to be held on Friday, August 26, 2022 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
International Students Serving as GTAs
If you are an International Student who will be serving as a teaching assistant, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule a Spoken English Test (SET). A member of the Spoken English Language Partners (SELP) will contact you to confirm an appointment.
The test takes about 20 minutes, and your results will be shared immediately following completion of the test.
