Individuals who regularly handle invoices as part of their job may be especially vulnerable to this scam.

These scams most commonly appear as email messages saying you have received an invoice via PayPal. If you then click the link and pay using your PayPal account, your money is then transferred to the scammer who sent the invoice.

How does the scam work?

This scam relies on the fact that these fake invoices aren’t technically fake at all: They are real PayPal invoices, created by fraudsters to mimic an invoice from a real entity like GoDaddy or the World Health Organization.

Because the invoice appears to come from a well-known and reputable organization, you may believe the invoice is legitimate and pay up without thinking. Because the invoices are real PayPal invoices (albeit created fraudulently), once you click "Pay" your money will be automatically transferred via your PayPal account to the fraudster.

If you receive an invoice that can’t be tied to a specific purchase or work order, be skeptical, and don’t succumb to time pressure. Reach out to contact the entity the invoice is purportedly from (look for their contact info online; do not contact the person who sent the invoice directly) to confirm its legitimacy.

I fell for this scam. What should I do?

While it may not be possible to retrieve your money, the best chance is to file a dispute with PayPal for fraud:

Go to PayPal’s Resolution Center

Click "Report a Problem"

Scroll through your list of transactions until you come across the fraudulent invoice. Having weak, easy-to-guess, or re-used passwords puts you at risk of becoming a victim of cyber criminals.

To learn how to keep your health, financial and other information safe, on World Password Day (May 5), The Daily tapped into the expertise of Katie Starr, former information assurance analyst with Case Western Reserve University's [U]Tech, who shared five tips to follow.

Read on to learn Starr's tips for creating a strong password.

1. What tips do you have for creating a strong password or passphrase?

Create long passwords/phrases: at least 12 characters, but longer is better. If you must remember the passphrase, make it memorable but not easy to guess by a human or computer. If it's too simple, a computer can guess it, but if it's something people say all the time, a human can guess it.

Use the best parts of a password and a phrase to make it complex: Use long, unrelated words, separated by spaces or replacing a letter with a symbol or number. I like to misspell a word in a way I can remember but that a computer might not know to try, such as misspelling riding to ridin (bonus points for ridin').

Think about the example "correct horse battery staple" (spaces included), like in this cartoon.

Use CWRU's Passphrase Goodness tester to see if your passphrase can be improved, even if it's for a website outside of case.edu.

2. What are the risks of having a weak password?

A computer and a skilled attacker can easily crack or guess your password in a time frame shorter than you would normally change it. This would allow them to gain access to your private data, such as health records, financial records and emails on websites, work/personal devices, etc.

Attackers could then steal your money or data, hold your data for ransom, impersonate you, damage your company, etc. The risks are endless as your password is the key to your kingdom.

3. Can you give some examples of common mistakes people make when creating a password?

Reusing passwords across multiple websites is common, but it's a bad idea. Other common mistakes include creating a password that is too complex to remember but too short to provide any protection, and not using the spacebar and other special characters when creating a passphrase.

4. What are some other password best practices members of the community should keep in mind?

Use a password manager so you only have to remember two passwords: the password to get onto your computer, and the password to unlock your password manager. Let the password manager remember the many long, complex, unique passwords for you.

5. Anything else we should know?

There are some contradictions here—that passwords are weak because they are too short, but some really long passphrases aren't strong enough (at least according to the passphrase goodness tester). There's a balance to strike between complexity and ease of remembering: length increases complexity, but only to a certain point, and after that, you have to introduce other characters, cases and numbers.

If you want to remember the password/phrase, then only a few characters and numbers are necessary to be complex enough. Sometimes it can seem like our passphrases are never good enough, but with these tips and your own ingenuity, you should be able to create something with no trouble.

Thu, 05 May 2022 14:26:04 +0000 pjh 10191 at https://case.edu/utech Updates to Zoom Increases Interactivity https://case.edu/utech/about/utech-news/updates-zoom-increases-interactivity Updates to Zoom Increases Interactivity pjh Wed, 04/27/2022 - 06:31

Article Date

April 27, 2022

Zoom recently made significant updates to its platform, offering more interactive options for virtual meetings.

Whiteboard

Now, you can create whiteboards before your meeting and then share them during the meeting. Changes are automatically saved to your Whiteboard library. Later, you can share these whiteboards with your team.

Access the Whiteboard feature through the Zoom web portal or update your Zoom client.

Polls

Another sought-after feature allows hosts to create polls and use them in multiple meetings. To create new polls, sign into the Zoom web portal, select “Meetings” from the left side menu and click on “Polls” in the horizontal menu.

If you have a poll from another meeting you wish to reuse, find the poll in the Zoom web portal, click on the three horizontal dots next to it and select “Add to Library.” It will then appear in the Polls tab. From that tab you can enable each poll so it appears as one of your choices during your next meeting.

Breakout Rooms

An enhancement to Breakout Rooms allows the host to view participant status and activity level from the main session. This means the host can see participants’ audio, video, screen-sharing status and their reactions during the breakout room session.

Reactions

Zoom’s latest update allows participants to raise their physical hand or give a thumbs up in front of the camera and the corresponding reaction is shown in Zoom. Gesture Reaction requires users to enable this in their Zoom client by opening the settings and under the “General” tab selecting “Active the following emojis based on hand gesture recognition.”

To get the most out of Zoom, keep your Zoom software up to date.
