LDAP servers upgraded with latest certificates

University engineers upgraded the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) production servers with the latest SHA-2 certificates. LDAP allows members of the Case Western Reserve community to log into many university services. As a result of this maintenance, system security is improved. LDAP service is not affected by this maintenance.


Move Sympa mailing lists to Google Groups with new migration tool

Information Technology Services (ITS) has developed a self-service migration tool that allows members of the university community to migrate mailing lists to Groups easily.

The automated tool ensures that all common settings of the Sympa list are matched in Groups. After the migration, users may consult a post-migration checklist to verify list settings were matched appropriately.

Teaching assistants may now upload grades with Blackboard Wizard

Effective March 10, any member of the Case Western Reserve community who is identified as a teaching assistant in the Student Information System (SIS) may upload grades from Blackboard to SIS using the Blackboard Wizard. Previously, teaching assistants were unable to complete this task unless they were a designated grading proxy in SIS. Information Technology Services (ITS) implemented this change in response to user feedback.

Windows users: Pay special attention to Windows Update to avoid unintentionally installing Windows 10

Earlier this month, Microsoft recategorized Windows 10 as “recommended” in Windows Update. Windows Update is the service on Windows machines that provides the latest version of operating system components and other tools.

As a result of this change, Windows users at Case Western Reserve who are not yet running Windows 10 may be prompted to install it. There are at least two warnings before the Windows 10 update installs. However, Windows 7 and 8.1 users are encouraged to pay special attention when installing updates if they do not wish to upgrade to Windows 10.

Faculty: Review and evaluate learning management systems at CWRU

The Teaching and Learning Technologies unit of Information Technology Services (ITS) continues to lead an evaluation of how Blackboard and other learning management systems at Case Western Reserve are used. The purpose of this effort is to determine whether they remain the best choices for the university’s students, faculty and staff.

ITS has organized opportunities for instructors to review and evaluate the experience of using learning management systems. Through this effort, instructors can work hands-on with three potential alternatives to the current Blackboard Learn 9.1 system. Instructors will evaluate the ease of use of an application, the approximate amount of time needed to complete tasks and the overall experience of using the application. The three alternative systems include Blackboard Ultra, Brightspace and Canvas.

Information Technology Services (ITS) has published a new website for apprising the university community of fraudulent emails that are distributed across campus, an act commonly known as “phishing.” Through this website, the ITS information security team will post examples of phishing attacks seen on campus as soon as they see them. The site also features ways to avoid falling victim to phishing attacks as well as common characteristics of these fake messages.

Act now to prevent Dell security issues that may allow unwanted access to recently purchased computers

Industry experts have discovered that recently purchased Dell computers ship with a faulty digital certificate (eDellRoot) that could allow attackers to imitate legitimate websites on the computers. An imitated website could take many forms—from Google to online banking sites—with the intent of capturing login details and other private information.

Models potentially affected include:

  • Inspiron 5000 notebooks

  • Latitude notebooks

  • XPS 15 notebooks

  • Inspiron desktops

  • Precision M4800 notebooks


CWRU mailing lists to be gradually migrated to Google Groups

From department announcements to student correspondence, mailing lists play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of Case Western Reserve University. It is critical that the university use a mailing list system that is modern and reliable. To that end, Case Western Reserve mailing lists will undergo a gradual migration from Lists@Case to Google Groups in the months ahead. Please note that there is no requirement that mailing lists be migrated to Google Groups prior to the end of the calendar year 2015.


New Telephone Services Order (TSO) Form now available

Apple device owners and iCloud users: Do you want to increase the security of your Apple account?  With iOS 9 and Mac OS X El Capitan, Apple is adding the ability to turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple ID. This ensures that you, and only you, can access the documents, photos and other data stored in your iCloud account.

Faculty Focus: A closer look at antibiotic resistance

Antibiotic resistance is a confirmed crisis according to leading health organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Resistant infectious microbes take an estimated 23,000 lives each year in the United States. To get an appreciation of this sum, imagine the death toll if a wide-body jet airliner were to crash once every week. Worse yet, patients who are hospitalized long term for infectious diseases run the risk of contracting Clostridium difficile infections, which are responsible for another 29,000 deaths annually.


PeopleSoft Financials users: now you can override default ship-to location, SpeedType on requisitions

This past June, members of the Case Western Reserve University community were advised of an issue affecting purchase orders in PeopleSoft Financials. Users experienced difficulties overriding the default “Ship-to Location” at the requisition level. The issue affected SmartCART Purchase Orders (POs), in which incorrect ship-to locations were sourced onto the PO. Additionally, the SpeedType default in requisition settings malfunctioned on the checkout screen.

The Case Western Reserve ERP team has continued to work with the university’s PeopleSoft Financials partners on a resolution. Effective 8:30 a.m. Sept. 25, technical changes will be made to PeopleSoft Financials that will resolve these issues.

On Monday, July 20, Microsoft released a security patch for all currently supported versions of Windows. Mac Mail users: delay upgrading to version 10.10.4 of OS X Yosemite

Members of the Case Western Reserve University community who rely on Mac Mail for managing their CWRU Google Apps for Education Account should delay updating their system to the latest version of OS X Yosemite (10.10.4). With this latest update to Yosemite, Mac Mail does not consistently support the protocol needed to send university mail from outside the Virtual Private Network (VPN), the CaseWireless network or the campus wired network.

Case Western Reserve University’s web content management system—TERMINALFOUR Site Manager—will be unavailable during the early morning of May 14, 2015, while scheduled maintenance is performed. The work will start at approximately 3 a.m. and should conclude prior to the start of the university’s workday at 8:30 a.m.

Administrators of TERMINALFOUR-hosted websites will be unable to access Site Manager (webcms.case.edu) during the maintenance period. Site Manager is the online platform used to create, edit and delete pages of TERMINALFOUR-hosted websites. All university websites will remain live and available to visitors during the maintenance period.

These are the questions that Case Western Reserve will explore over the coming months as Information Technology Services (ITS) evaluates Learning Management Systems (LMSs) in use at the university. LMSs, such as Blackboard Learn, Moodlerooms and Canvas, provide instructors with a suite of tools to manage their courses and to communicate with students. In turn, these platforms help students complete their coursework and stay atop of their academic commitments.

But over the last several years, there have been changes in the LMS landscape with new competitors in the marketplace. Case Western Reserve is an ideal position to assess its LMS options as the license renewal process with Blackboard Learn begins.

Michael Kubit named deputy chief information officer

Workman announced the appointment of Michael Kubit as Case Western Reserve’s new deputy chief information officer, effective this month. Kubit, who has served as the division’s interim chief operations officer since August 2013, brings more than 30 years of experience at the university to the newly created role.


PeopleSoft Financials upgraded to version 9.2

‌From April 16 to 19, PeopleSoft Financials at Case Western Reserve University was upgraded to version 9.2. To access PeopleSoft Financials, visit case.edu/fin. To access the PeopleSoft Financials reporting system, visit case.edu/erp/report.

Version 9.2 brings improvements to the user interface as well as changes to how some processes are conducted. The courses in the CWRU Administrative Professional Series (CAPS) that provide training for PeopleSoft Financials are being updated to reflect the changes to the user interface.

Google releases new Calendar app for Apple iPhone, iPad

Google Calendar is now available as a standalone app for iOS devices, such as the iPhone and iPad. (The Android version of the Google Calendar app was released in November 2014.)

The new app offers the traditional functionality found in the Google Calendar web interface, as well as features optimized for your smartphone and tablet.

Adobe Connect to be upgraded to version 9.3 Monday, March 9

Information Technology Services (ITS) will upgrade Adobe Connect (connect.case.edu) to version 9.3 on the morning of Monday, March 9 between midnight and 6 a.m. Adobe Connect will be unavailable to users during this six-hour window. Online course ‘Representing the Professional Athlete’ to launch March 11

On March 11, sports and law combine when Case Western Reserve University School of Law and Distinguished Visiting Practitioner Peter A. Carfagna resumes Representing the Professional Athlete. This is the second offering of Carfagna’s massive open online course, which is produced in partnership with Information Technology Services (ITS).

With over thirty years of experience in sports law and marketing, Carfagna will guide students through the four stages of a professional athlete’s career. Through lecture videos and guest interviews of sports industry experts, the course will explore baseball, football, basketball, tennis, golf and soccer over nine weeks.

CAPS provides training to university employees on the policies and procedures that direct their stewardship of university funds. Together, CAPS is comprised of three online and 10 in-person courses.

Adobe to retire FormsCentral this summer; switch to alternative solution today

This summer, Adobe will retire FormsCentral. With FormsCentral, users could create interactive forms and collect data in real time. The service is built into the current version of Acrobat Pro, which is popular product on the Software Center.

Starting June 23, 2015, users will be unable to make or edit forms using FormsCentral. Account data will be available for download until July 28, 2015.

From Dropbox to Apple and Boxer to CloudMagic, several third-parties have launched apps aimed at making mobile email fast, intuitive and productive. Blackboard Learn email functionality to be unavailable midnight to 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30

Engineers will conduct work on the servers that host Blackboard Learn between midnight and 6 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015. During this time, emails sent from within Blackboard Learn will not reach their intended recipients. Instructors are advised to not use Blackboard Learn’s email capabilities until after the maintenance period has ended.


Two-factor authentication to be added to VPN Jan. 26

Case Western Reserve is incorporating two-factor authentication into the VPN. Two-factor authentication provides added security by prompting you for two authentication components when you attempt to login: your password and a unique code. The unique code is usable only once, and it is accessible from the device of your choosing (typically your cell phone). Each time you login, you are issued a new code.

Starting Jan. 26, 2015, VPN users will see a “Second Password” field when accessing the VPN with the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client. But, it will be mandatory later this year. This purpose of this new field is to accommodate the two-factor authentication code.


Telephone, voicemail upgrade marks first phase of large initiative

Information Technology Services (ITS) upgraded Case Western Reserve’s telephone and voicemail systems on Jan. 7, 2015. When you access your voice mailbox for the first time after this date, you will be prompted to set a new PIN and to record a personal greeting. Instructions regarding this process, as well as helpful guides for using your new voice mailbox, are available by visiting case.edu/its/uc.

  • A fully responsive layout—watch videos on a small tablet or on a large monitor

Google Drive storage now unlimited for Case Western Reserve users

‌Google Drive for Education now offers unlimited storage to university students, staff and faculty members, as well as alumni and active affiliates. With Drive, users may access files from the nearest smartphone, tablet or Web browser, and upload individual files as large as 5 terabytes in size. The unlimited storage also applies to Gmail (webmail.case.edu), Google+ and Google Sites.
