Important [U]Tech Announcement - Ransomware Cyberattack
A significant new cyberattack, similar to the “Wanna Cry” ransomware worm, is affecting major companies world-wide. Cybersecurity researchers are saying that the new ransomware appears to be a variation of a well-known ransomware strain called Petya.
As this event uses the same vulnerability that was exploited during the “Wanna Cry” ransomware event, please apply Microsoft-recommended patches for the operating systems cited in the campus email notice from May 13 titled “Important Windows Ransomware Update.” The link is:
If you have already applied the patches, you are already protected. Otherwise, please install the patches immediately.
University Technology's Information Security Office is contacting system owners whose systems have not been patched. However, the office confirms that CWRU has not been affected by the exploit at this time and the university’s infrastructure and servers have all been patched.
Please do not hesitate to contact the [U]Tech Service Desk at 216.368.HELP (4357) or firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance. If the CWRU campus community faces additional impacts from the global event, UTech will take additional measures to mitigate the infection.
