Serving a Global Society

Support for students and faculty provides the building blocks that will allow the engineering school to create and enhance high-impact, multidisciplinary centers of excellence.

Advanced Materials
From compatible implants that meld with the body’s tissues to anti-corrosion coatings that protect wind turbines from the elements, the Institute for Advanced Materials advances polymers and other building blocks of innovation.

Launched in 2007, the Great Lakes Energy Institute seeks solutions for today’s energy demands and also develops energy research and energy-use strategies for tomorrow.

Human Health
Building on the school’s proud history as an international leader in biomedical innovation, an institute focusing on human health and technology will pursue translational and cross-disciplinary research within the school and across the university.

In the spirit of the school’s “think box” programs—a collection of initiatives to encourage ingenious approaches and unexpected collaborations—a new institute will allow students and partners to roll up their sleeves and follow an idea from prototype to business startup. The institute also will provide state-of-the-art workspaces to incubate these new companies.
