As we face the critical November 2024 presidential election, this course focuses on past U.S. economic policy, the dramatic changes advocated in Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and implemented in his administration, and Joe Biden’s reaction in both separating from Trump and following him. The course will consider classical economic theory, the extent to which Presidents ranging from George H.W. Bush to Bill Clinton to Barak Obama have been influenced by it, the political basis for Trump’s sharp turn away from it and the continuing impact of the new economics in this year’s election. Finally, we will consider what all this portends for America’s economic future.
