Assistant Professor (tenure-track) - Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor faculty position. The division has a long tradition of groundbreaking research in basic science and medicine. Current areas of research expertise within the division include neural control of breathing, sepsis and neural inflammation, sleep disorders, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pulmonary hypertension. Collaborations exist with other interdepartmental research centers throughout the university. The university has vigorous interdisciplinary graduate programs (MS, PhD, and MD), and the division actively engages in medical education and research at the graduate, resident and fellow levels. The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine offers competitive startup packages, excellent laboratory space and core facilities, and a highly collaborative environment.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should have a PhD with a strong record of research accomplishments. Successful candidates are expected to develop innovative and externally funded research programs, participate in divisional education programs, and contribute to service opportunities. In addition to establishing their own research program, the successful candidate will collaborate as part of a funded research program to 1) determine anatomic and functional maps of the ponto-medullary respiratory circuits in rat models of critical illness including sepsis and lung injury; 2) to determine if the etiology of the inflammatory process affects neuroinflammation, maladaptation of respiratory network activity and VPV; and 3) to assess the causal relationships between neuro-inflammation, respiratory network activity and VPV and whether anti-neuro-inflammatory therapies will attenuate the increases in respiratory frequency and predictability of VPV and restore healthy respiratory network activity. The ability to apply recent advances in multi-electrode array technology and analysis to map respiratory local field potentials throughout the ponto-medullary respiratory network is essential. Candidates at the Assistant Professor level will have significant postdoctoral research experience with the expectation of developing an extramurally funded and nationally recognized research program.
