This full-time academic position oversees simulation education activities for the Cleveland-based Master of Science in Anesthesia (MSA) Program at Case Western Reserve University. The Director of Simulation Education is responsible for arranging, evaluating, and overseeing all simulation education activities, ensuring alignment with the academic curriculum and program goals. Responsibilities include course mapping, curriculum development, simulation faculty development, and teaching in the simulation lab. The Director ensures that all activities comply with University, School, and Program policies and procedures.
The Director of Simulation Education will devote two extended administrative days per week, with one static day on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and will hold regular in person office hours for students.
Under the overall supervision of the Program Director, and in close collaboration with the Directors of Didactic and Clinical Education, the Director of Simulation Education will:
1. Lead Simulation Instruction and Evaluation
Lead simulation instruction and support classroom and clinical correlation. Collaborate with clinical and didactic faculty to deliver simulation education aligned with clinical training.
Oversee and maintain the simulation evaluation system, ensuring regular reviews and updates to reflect MSA standards. Coordinate simulation schedules for students and faculty, including full time and adjunct instructors, in collaboration with the Program Director and Directors of Didactic and Clinical Education. Provide didactic and clinical instruction each semester, as required, in coordination with the Program Director and other core directors. Ensure proper onboarding and orientation for simulation faculty and students.
2. Simulation Evaluation, Progress Reporting, and Feedback
Oversee regular progress reports on students’ simulation performance, ensuring that these reports are shared with simulation faculty and core faculty. Support the development of simulation instructors.
3. Remediation of Simulation Skills and Competency
Collaborate with the Program Director, Clinical and Didactic Directors, and simulation faculty to develop and oversee remediation plans for students requiring additional support in simulation skills or competency. Monitor student progress during remediation and provide continuous feedback.
4. Regular Review of Simulation Equipment and Supplies
Conduct regular reviews of simulation practices to ensure alignment with MSA program goals and clinical applications. Collaborate with clinical and didactic directors to ensure proper integration of simulation activities.
5. Participation in the Committee on Progress and Promotion
Actively participate in the Committee on Progress and Promotion, supporting student advancement through the program. Provide data and insights from simulation evaluations to guide decisions regarding student progression.
6. Simulation Curriculum Development
Lead the development and continuous improvement of simulation curricula in collaboration with the Program Director and other faculty. Serve as course instructor for simulation courses, ensuring alignment with program goals. Ensure simulation courses include a schedule of activities, objectives, and evaluation mechanisms.
7. Mentoring and Academic Advising
Provide mentorship and academic advising to MSA students, offering guidance on academic and simulation progress.
8. Administrative Functions and Collaboration
Maintain and coordinate information management systems and records to support academic and administrative functions, including student rosters and grades. Interface with external organizations on behalf of the MSA program. Assist with recruiting efforts and marketing strategies. Support the creation of simulation education budgets.
9. Professional Development and Participation in Faculty Committees
Attend faculty meetings regularly. Participate in local, national, and international professional organizations to stay updated on trends in anesthesia simulation education and practice. Assist with special projects and support faculty in simulation and clinical education.
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
Applicants must be a practicing, certified anesthesiologist assistant (CAA) and should be an experienced teacher with practical skills in physiology, biophysics, mathematics, pathology, physics and chemistry. A minimum of three years’ teaching experience required. Seven years or more teaching experience desired.
Applicants must have active hospital credentialling committee approval or ability to obtain hospital credentialling committee approval to work as a CAA in Ohio, which must be maintained while in this position. Master’s degree in anesthesia is required; ideal candidate will also possess a graduate degree in education (MEd or PhD).
At the MSA Program’s expense, the incumbent is expected to obtain and maintain their Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator® (CHSE®) credentials within the first three years of employment.

- Able to consistently meet attendance and deadlines
- Ability to analyze facts, exercise judgment, and arrive at valid conclusions.
- Working knowledge of computer software applications and distance education.
