Location: National Synchrotron Light Source II, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY

Supervisor Name and Title: Erik Farquhar, Research Scientist

 I. STATEMENT OF RESEARCH AND SCIENTIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

The Case Western Reserve University Center for Proteomics and Bioinformatics (CPB, https://case.edu/medicine/nutrition/case-center-proteomics-and-bioinformatics) seeks applications for a talented, enthusiastic postdoctoral scholar to join our Center for Synchrotron Biosciences (CSB, https://case.edu/medicine/csb/) team based full-time at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II, https://www.bnl.gov/nsls2) at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, NY. The CSB operates the 17-BM XFP Partner beamline at NSLS-II for access to the synchrotron X-ray footprinting structural mass spectrometry method, and promotes the application of this approach and other synchrotron-based tools to a variety of structural biology problems relevant to biomedical research.

The successful applicant will contribute to our synchrotron X-ray footprinting science and user support program. There will be opportunities to participate in ongoing research efforts in several areas, including development and characterization of novel X-ray footprinting labeling chemistries, development of methods for X-ray footprinting of the cellular proteome, and others. Opportunities exist to collaborate with current XFP beamline users and contribute to their use of X-ray footprinting towards their research projects, and to develop new collaborations applying X-ray footprinting. The successful applicant will also work with the beamline lead scientist to help support day-to-day operation and ongoing technological developments at the NSLS-II XFP beamline.

 II. TECHNICAL SKILLS

Required technical skills include:

  • Excellent background in structural biology, chemistry, or other related fields as evidenced by publication record and educational background.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry data analysis in the life sciences.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a collaborative team environment for solving scientific problems.

Preferred technical skills include:

  • Familiarity with / experience in bacterial cell culture and protein expression methods.
  • Familiarity with / experience in synchrotron-based structural biology methods.
  • Experience / interest in Python programming for scientific applications and/or data analysis pipeline development.

III. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist visiting scholars and students in the execution of X-ray footprinting experiments at the NSLS-II XFP beamline, including compliance with NSLS-II facility safety requirements.

IV. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related discipline. The successful candidate must have strong analytical, oral, and written communication skills.

V. WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is based full-time off-campus at the National Synchrotron Light Source II, a US Department of Energy user facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, NY. The full salary range for this position is $65000 - $80000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience.

VI. HOW TO APPLY

To apply, send a CV, cover letter describing your qualifications and interest in the position, and the names and contact details of three references to Erik Farquhar, efarquhar@bnl.gov, XFP lead beamline scientist.
