You’ve got big goals in science and medicine

Headshot of Zaynab B. Shaheed

Case Western Reserve University science and pre-medicine students have a lot of opportunities to get involved in research and hands-on learning.

A lot…

2025 graduate Zaynab B. Shaheed conducted research with the School of Medicine and with nearby University Hospitals. As an American Heart Association SURE Scholar—a research program for STEM students—Zaynab studied the impact of raising the tobacco purchasing age, presenting her findings at CWRU’s Undergraduate Research Symposium and the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Chicago.

But that’s not all—Zaynab is listed as an author on the first data brief from the 2025 Cleveland Health Survey, sharing insight into tobacco prevention efforts and health outcomes. She has two manuscripts under review from her School of Medicine research.

While at CWRU, Zaynab was an outpatient medical scribe at Cleveland Clinic, an observer at University Hospitals and The Centers for Families and Children, a training manager for the Community Engaged in Cancer Research Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and a teaching assistant for an epidemiology course. This summer she is a community tobacco control and prevention intern with the Cleveland Department of Public Health, helping implement local legislation.
Zaynab earned her bachelor of arts degree in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism, and will attend Duke University School of Medicine for her master’s degree in population health sciences with a focus on health policy. She plans to pursue medical school, become a physician and lead research to reduce health disparities.

Thanks to the opportunities she found at CWRU and in Cleveland, Zaynab is well on her way to achieving her goals—just as Case Western Reserve can help you pursue your future in science and medicine.
