The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is a Case Western Reserve University student organization that aims to provide support for Latinx/Hispanic students in STEM fields. Our mission is to change lives by empowering Latinx/Hispanic students to realize their fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.
The Latinx/Hispanic community is underrepresented in higher education and in the STEM workforce. SHPE works to provide a strong, supportive network of peers who can help enhance the college experience and inspire others to strive for greatness. We focus on improving the retention of students in STEM through academic, professional and personal development efforts. We provide a variety of professional and social events to aid students in their success as well as establish a sense of community on campus (nuestra familia!).
Our professional development events include workshops for resumes, interview tips, elevator pitches and getting involved in research. We also have monthly Cafecito Talks, a networking series where students interact with representatives from well-known companies and learn about employment opportunities. Our social events include mixers with other STEM groups on campus, spontaneous outings and game nights. We also collaborate with the other Latinx student group, La Alianza, to host a cultural show, a gala recognizing student achievements, and a fun social night with dancing and Latin music.
One of the major benefits of being involved with SHPE is the chance to attend the SHPE National Convention. This is one of the largest gatherings of Latinx/Hispanic students in STEM from around the country! The convention offers professional development workshops, networking opportunities with hundreds of renowned companies, and a massive career fair! Many of our members are offered internships, co-ops or full-time positions exclusively from this convention.
We initiated our first ScholarSHPE in Spring 2021 and are actively continuing our fundraising efforts. We plan to award students this upcoming spring semester and select scholarship recipients annually.
We are active on our website and our Instagram page. Check us out to keep updated on our events!
