The College for Women

Western Reserve University was a coeducational institution until 1888, when President Hiram C. Haydn established the College for Women at Western Reserve University. The College for Women shared many facilities and faculty with Adelbert College, the undergraduate college for men at Western Reserve.

The college’s last alumnae graduated in 1972 ahead of its consolidation with Cleveland and Adelbert Colleges. Its legacy survives in part through the university’s Flora Stone Mather Center for Women; it was established through a donation from the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association, which dissolved in 2008.
