Earl W. Sutherland Jr., former professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology, led the discovery of cyclic AMP, a cellular signaling molecule responsible for many metabolic processes. He won the 1974 Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine for his contributions to diabetic therapies.
