Western Reserve College President George E. Pierce (presidency years: 1834–1855) continued Charles B. Storrs’ expansion of the Hudson, Ohio, campus through efforts such as creating the college’s first medical department as well as what is now Western Reserve Academy’s Loomis Observatory.
However, the college’s financial struggles that came with such growth would mark his presidency, and cuts were made—including to the theology department where he, a Presbyterian minister, worked.
The Pierce House residence hall was named in his honor.
