The first Black alumnus of Western Reserve College, John Frederick Augustus Sykes Fayette was a leader in abolitionist causes on campus.
He would later serve as a missionary near Ontario, Canada, where he founded a school and multiple Presbyterian congregations and led the construction of Barton Stone Church, a building that still stands today.
In 2024, a new residence hall named after Fayette opened in the university’s South Residential Village.
