The cofounder of the nation’s oldest health law program spent more than three decades at its helm. Alumnus Oliver C. Schroeder Jr. founded the Law-Medicine Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1953, leading it until his retirement in 1986. What began as a resource for forensic science education across legal and medical disciplines evolved into a hub for opportunities in bioethics, medical malpractice advocacy, government healthcare regulation and more.
He served as acting dean of the law school from 1960 to 1965, and interviewed faculty members and alumni to compile an oral history of the school between 1988 and 1989. The Oliver C. Schroeder Jr. Distinguished Research Scholar and Associate Director at the Spangenberg Center for Law, Technology & the Arts position, held by Betsy Rosenblatt, was named in his honor.
