About the Program

When you earn your PhD in Applied Mathematics from Case Western Reserve University, you’ll enter a rapidly growing field with a variety of career prospects. In addition to enhancing your knowledge of mathematics, you’ll learn about scientific computing and other industry-adjacent specialties. We keep our classes small so we can have a rigorous curriculum while still offering enough time for individualized attention and an inclusive environment. Your broad training in conceptual, technical and computational tools will set you up for success when you pursue your career as an analyst, logistician or another role at companies such as Google, PNC Bank and Microsoft (where many of our graduates now work).

What to Expect

In approximately five years at Case Western Reserve, you’ll cover a lot of ground: mathematical modeling, numerical solutions of partial differential equations, probability and stochastic processes in biology, and Bayesian scientific computing, to name a few. While our program isn’t as easy as pi, you’ll have the constant support of faculty as you complete your coursework as well as participate in interdisciplinary research projects. Your practical knowledge and research experience combined will make you a more effective professional when you enter the workforce.

The knowledge and skills that I acquired both from the classes that I took and my research is enabling me to design, build and apply machine learning algorithms in the space of Internet of Things. The programs offered by the department are relevant to pursue a career in either academia or any industry. Now, as an alum, I look back on my time at CWRU fondly because I'm really glad that I got the chance to be part of this awesome family of smart people.
