To learn Greek and Latin takes years of patient dedication and hours each day, especially for those who start after high school. 

If you began your studies in related fields such as philosophy, art history or medieval studies and wish to pursue an advanced degree in classics or other humanities disciplines, this one-year, post-baccalaureate certificate program from the Department of Classics at Case Western Reserve University is designed for you. Through our curriculum, you’ll solidify your knowledge in Greek and Latin cultures and languages, allowing you to make the leap to a full-fledged graduate program or simply enrich your life.

This hands-on certificate program prepares you to read large quantities of Greek and Latin at an advanced speed. Here, you’ll learn from experts who understand and appreciate the culture—and you’ll benefit from personalized attention thanks to our small class sizes. It takes many years of patient study to master Greek and Latin, however with proper instruction from Case Western Reserve University, a deeper understanding is within reach.  

Our coursework offers a deep dive into Greek culture with courses like Readings in Ancient Philosophy, Introduction to Greek Poetry, and Comedy. We also have a well-rounded curriculum in the Latin world with classes like Latin Prose Authors, Horace Odes & Epodes, and Survey of Latin Literature. Regardless of subject, you’ll have the chance to interact with other students at the university and learn from their perspectives on the realities of doctoral study in the humanities.

Quick Fact
The post-baccalaureate graduate certificate program can be completed in one year. The 16-credit hour program is broken down into six credit hours of Greek language study and six credit hours of Latin language study with four credit hours in thesis writing and presentation.

Beyond the Classroom

Atlantis is Case Western Reserve’s student-run classics club. Members meet once a month for classics-themed events such as movies, games, food, trips to the theatre and more. The group is home for more than 200 classics majors, minors and students who are taking a class in our department, not to mention students just interested in making friends and learning more about the Ancient World.

Admission Details

To apply to this certificate program, you must have earned a bachelor’s degree, demonstrated a strong academic record (a recommended GPA of 3.5 or greater) and pursued at least one year of college-level Greek or Latin study. All applicants must be highly motivated and have a strong reason for mastering ancient languages as well as a realistic appreciation of the work entailed.
