Patent Practice

A law student studying in the library
Master of Arts

About the Program

The first of its kind in Ohio, and one of only a handful in the nation, a Master of Arts in Patent Practice from Case Western Reserve University will prepare you for your career as a patent agent. Professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare, file and prosecute patent applications are in high demand at many law firms and corporate legal departments—our program aims to fill this demand.

What to Expect

Designed as an alternative for students who wish to pursue a career in patent practice without having to take the full three-year JD, our program immerses students in patent law and patent office practice. Through a series of courses and experiential opportunities, you’ll not only learn the intricacies of patent law needed to become a successful patent agent, but you’ll also represent actual clients and prepare and file patent applications on their behalf in our IP Venture Clinic.

Our curriculum is based on a multi-disciplinary approach to patent practice that is purposefully designed to equip you with the required knowledge, skills and experience you need to become a productive patent agent in both law firms and corporate legal departments. If registered for full-time study, you can complete the program in as little as nine months.

I’m very appreciative for the opportunity to go through the Master's in Patent Practice program. It’s a phenomenal program for students like me, and highly complementary to the existing programs at the law school.
