Andrew Medvedev (CWR '97) wants the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University to become "the most audacious business school"—one that aims to build a better world by using management scholarship to tackle urgent societal problems.

Previously one of the school's interim co-deans for nearly two years, Medvedev became dean in July and has a robust to-do list.

He's working to:

  • Continue reimagining academic programs for greater accessibility, experiential learning and integration of artificial intelligence.
  • Build industry and alumni partnerships, leveraging the school's global alumni network.
  • Invest in the research enterprise to deliver on the promise of a problem-solving management school. "We are not in the degree business," said Medvedev, who holds the Albert J. Weatherhead III Professorship of Management. "We are in the experience, transformation and empowerment business. If our students leave here having discovered themselves and reach previously unattainable opportunities, we will have fulfilled our educational purpose."

J.B. Silvers, PhD, served as the other interim dean. He is a widely recognized financial management and health services expert who held faculty and leadership roles at the school over 45 years and is now the John R. Mannix Medical Mutual of Ohio Professor Emeritus of Healthcare Finance.

Together, they revamped the school's development and alumni engagement strategy, launched an online MBA in product management and founded the school's Office of Strategic Research Initiatives to create more opportunities for collaborative, interdisciplinary research.

"Andrew's proven leadership and deep ties to the university make him an exceptional choice to lead Weatherhead into its next chapter," said CWRU President Eric W. Kaler.

Medvedev emigrated from Russia as a teenager, earned an undergraduate degree in economics from CWRU and later an MBA from Harvard Business School. He spent more than two decades in investment management and investment banking, most recently as managing director and a member of the investment committee of Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners. He also was on CWRU's Board of Trustees.

"The litmus test for whether we're succeeding beyond our campus is whether business and society leaders seek us out for guidance on their most critical challenges," Medvedev said.
