Policy Statement

Case will not employ anyone under the age of 16. In addition, no one under the age of 18 will be employed in any position deemed hazardous by Human Resources and DOES or involving exposure to hazardous materials. Since every hiring decision is a critical one, it is necessary to verify that the candidates under consideration will have a high degree of potential for success. The following pre-employment requirements are the minimum requirements that a successful candidate will satisfy, as applicable. The Hiring Authority and the Hiring Supervisor can work together to expedite the satisfactory completion of these requirements, but the resulting information will be centralized in the candidate's file in the office of the Hiring Authority.


Case Application

Resumes will be accepted to initiate the application process. All candidates for staff and student employee positions will complete a job application and certify that all of the information listed on the job application and resume are true. Any misrepresentation or omission of facts on the resume or job application will be sufficient cause for refusal of employment or dismissal from employment, if the candidate obtains a position at the University.


Work Authorization

The Hiring Authority is responsible for verifying that the candidate has proper work authorization or visa status is obtained from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. For faculty and staff, the Hiring Authority and the Hiring Supervisor must consult with the Office of Foreign Faculty and Scholars or the Office of Counsel in all matters involving work authorization or visa status. The Office of International Student Services must be consulted when hiring student employees.


Curriculum Vitae or Resumé

All faculty and staff candidates are to submit a curriculum vitae/resume of their professional experience which includes prior employment, professional accomplishments, educational background, and references.


References

References for faculty will be required according to the normal recruitment process and may include solicited and unsolicited letters of recommendation as well as personal, character, and educational references.

Job-related references will be required for staff candidates from current or former employers.  An unsolicited letter of recommendation can not be used in lieu of the reference.  If it is not possible to obtain a job-related reference prior to employment, two personal references will be obtained.  The Hiring Authority may elect to verify a diploma for staff candidates with no prior work experience for positions that require a high school diploma or G.E.D.


Work Permits

Applicants under eighteen years of age, including temporary employees in sponsored work-study or intern programs, must submit a work permit approved by the candidate's Board of Education. Candidates under eighteen who have graduated from a vocational school or high school may provide proof of diploma in lieu of obtaining a work permit.


Policy Administration: Hiring Authority with the Office of Foreign Faculty and Scholars as necessary, in cooperation with the Hiring Supervisor.
