Keynote Presentation and Panel Discussion
Professor Merlin Donald, founding chair of Case's
Department of Cognitive Science, will trace the evolution of the human mind from its inception in a world that did not have any form of art to the present, commenting on the evolution of the mind and its relationship to art and technology.
Lynn Hershman Leeson will speak about the fusion of art and technology in her work, referencing the artificially intelligent virtual persona, DiNA, on view in All Digital exhibition at MOCA Cleveland, and the issues this artwork raises about artificial intelligence, the nature of human thought and consciousness and emergent levels of human/machine symbiosis. The ensuing panel discussion will grapple with how technology has radically affected, and in some cases revolutionized art; how technology profoundly affects the mind and the impact of recent developments in these fields on contemporary life and culture.
This lecture and discussion, featuring outstanding thinkers and artists, will help us all understand this new dynamic of art, mind, and technology and what this dynamic harbingers for our perceptions and memories, the ways our minds work and what it tells us about ourselves.
