Early in the morning of Oct. 27, 1886, a passerby discovered the fire that would destroy the Case Main Building, not long after Case School of Applied Science had moved from downtown Cleveland to the University Circle neighborhood.
Neighboring Adelbert College offered Case students the use of its main building and the Pierce Hall residential building, but Case trustees voted to rebuild, and Case students, faculty and staff moved back into their main building in 1888.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
