Former Physics Department Chair Frederick Reines discovered the neutrino, a subatomic particle that has no electric charge and minimal mass and interacts by way of gravity and the mechanism responsible for the radioactive decay of atoms.
He made this discovery alongside physicist Clyde Cowan and received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics for the findings of the Cowan–Reines neutrino experiment.
