From 1855 to 1871, Henry L. Hitchcock led Western Reserve College against the backdrop of expanding industry and bitter civil war. While president, the college eliminated the $25,000 debt that had jeopardized its future. Alongside his role as college president, Hitchcock also served as the mayor of the Village of Hudson, Ohio, in 1861.
He is the namesake of the Hitchcock House residence hall.
