Herbert Henry Dow founded Dow Chemical Co., now Dow Inc., which traces its beginnings to his study of Ohio brines at Case School of Applied Science. Later, as a chemistry professor at the Huron Road Hospital College in 1888 and 1889, he developed a process of using brine to manufacture bromine; he received a patent in 1892 for this process.
While an effort to start a company to work with brines in Canton, Ohio, failed, in 1987 he founded Dow Chemical Co., which remains an international leader in chemical, plastic and sealant manufacturing.
