Julie Louise Gerberding (WRC ’77, MED ’81)

Before she became CEO of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, renowned infectious disease expert Julie Louise Gerberding spent more than 10 years with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She was one of the most visible CDC representatives amid the 2001 anthrax attacks and in 2002, became the center’s first woman director. After leading the agency through more than 40 emergency responses to public health crises, she spent 12 years in leadership positions at the global pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck. 

Starting in June of 2025, Gerberding will chair Case Western Reserve University’s Board of Trustees.
