Following the death of her husband in 1848, Nancy Talbot Clark entered the medical school at Western Reserve College after being personally sponsored for admission by Dean John Delamater.
Four years later, in 1852, she became the second woman in the nation—and the first at Western Reserve College—to earn a medical degree. After facing decades of gender discrimination that forced her from her practice, she later opened a free dispensary for women in Boston.
