Renowned for developing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, alumnus Paul C. Lauterbur shared the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his contributions to medical imaging. His work expanded upon existing nuclear magnetic resonance technology that had been used to determine the structure of organic molecules and made it possible to observe where individual molecules were in relation to others.
