Director of Proton Physics
The Medical Physics and Dosimetry Division of the Department of Radiation Oncology has grown to keep pace with the expansion of services at University Hospitals. The division also provides comprehensive physics and dosimetry support to multiple community cancer treatment facilities. The development and implementation of new treatment modalities and technologies are critical to maintaining a state-of-the-art level of patient care and the further advancement of the department. Current physics research efforts have become focus areas to expand and improve the leading-edge treatment technologies. These include:
- Quantitative imaging, automatic image segmentation and registration;
- Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRS)/Stereotactic Body Radiation therapy(SBRT);
- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy(IMRT) /Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy(VMAT) optimization;
- Adaptive targeting and treatment;
- Monte Carlo for Proton and Photon Dosimetry;
- Proton Beam Therapy;
- Radionuclide Dosimetry;
- Biometrics for safe radiation delivery;
- Real-time tumor motion management using 4D-CT, 4D-CBCT, ABC, robotic-system;
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)-based dose calculation and treatment planning;
- Multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI)-guided focal radiation therapy;
- CT and mpMRI-guided 3D Brachytherapy;
- Robot-assisted SBRT and Brachytherapy
Improvements in treatment delivery and clinical impact are only part of the story with more research projects currently and in the near future.
