David Kaawa-Mafigiri (GRS '07, medical anthropology), an adjunct assistant professor of anthropology, co-edited Child Abuse and Neglect in Uganda, published by Springer.
Kaawa-Mafigiri is a senior lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. He received his PhD in medical anthropology from CWRU in 2007 and is associate director of the Center for Social Science Research on AIDS at CWRU.
Co-edited by Eddy Walakira, the book is the first by Ugandan authors to explore the complex issues of child abuse and neglect in Uganda. The book, which received support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, was officially released on Oct. 27 at a reception hosted by Makerere University.
Among those in attendance was Hon. Janat Mukwaya, a member of the Parliament of Uganda and the Uganda Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development. She praised the book, noting that the book's findings would be used to develop policies to prevent and respond to child abuse in Uganda.
Also attending was Jill Korbin, professor of anthropology, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and director of the Schubert Center for Childhood Studies. Korbin is co-editor of the Springer book series, Child Maltreatment: Contemporary Issues in Research and Policy.
