Attend upcoming McGaffin Carillon concerts
The Friends of the McGaffin Carillon will present a series of three concert during the last week of July. Fifty one bronze bells, 21,000 pounds of bronze, one performer high in the tower will fill the air with music. Picnics, blankets, and lawn chairs are welcome. Bring a friend and find a spot on the lawn or, better yet, on the campus areas behind the tower and enjoy a mid-summer break.
Get to know the performer 45 minutes prior to the concert in a pre-concert talk in the chapel. Hear about their program and about the ongoing plans for the McGaffin Carillon. Greet the performers following the concerts on the terrace at the Euclid Avenue tower entrance.
Concerts
On Sunday afternoon July 26 at 4 p.m. our own Keiran Cantilina will kick off the series with a concert that includes music by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, as well as Paul Simon, and George Harrison.
On Monday evening July 27 at 6 p.m. Elisabeth Wang, from San Antonio, TX will present a concert of music old and new. Original works for carillon will include music by the 18th century carillon virtuoso Matthias van den Gheyn, and recent carillonists, Staff Nees, John Courter, and Geert D’hollander. Folk and popular music will round out the program.
On Tuesday evening July 28 at 6 p.m. Alan Bowman of Dayton and Mariemont, OH, will present a concert including original music for carillon and transcriptions. Music by Beethoven, Albeniz, and Bizet join music from the movies by Chaplin, Arlen, and Shostakovich.
