Case Western Reserve University offers new concentrations, majors, minors and degree programs

Several new programs will offer perspectives on artificial intelligence

Case Western Reserve University offers a wide breadth of academic programs at all levels to propel our students forward and prepare them for ever-evolving career fields. 

Since January 2025, the university has approved a number of new concentrations, minors and degree offerings to align with the needs and trends of the job market, including several programs focused on aspects of artificial intelligence.

With these new offerings, students can tailor their studies to align with their interests and career goals, while gaining valuable skills and learning from top faculty in law, technology, medicine, the arts and more.

Additionally, the Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management is now offered in an online format and two programs have been renamed: the Master of Science in Positive Organization Development and Change has become Master of Science in Leadership and Organizational Change and the Master of Science in Pathology is now the Master of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biology of Disease.

Concentrations allow students to focus on a particular subject area within their primary program. The following programs have new concentrations:

Minor in Applied Artificial Intelligence

Case School of Engineering

This minor will help students gain a functional understanding of how modern artificial intelligence applications work, how to choose the appropriate application for the problem and how to correctly deploy it. Students also will explore the benefits of risks of using AI. 

This minor is open to all undergraduate students. Participants will practice applying artificial intelligence techniques in different disciplines. 

No prior experience or knowledge in computing is required or assumed. 

Minor in Business Information Technology

Weatherhead School of Management

The program prepares undergraduate students to bridge the gap between business strategy and technology solutions. Students will learn key concepts in data management, information systems, analytics and digital innovation. They will gain skills to leverage technology for informed decision-making, to improve organizational efficiency, and drive transformation in a rapidly evolving digital landscape—positioning them for careers at the intersection of business and IT.

All students—except those majoring in business information technology—can complete this minor. 

Graduate Certificate in Clinical Ethics

School of Medicine

Professionals from various healthcare disciplines can enroll in this program to gain foundational knowledge of clinical ethics or to enhance their background in this field.

Students will gain the skills necessary to describe and apply essential ethical theories and methodology, participate in clinical ethics consults, recognize ethical quandaries and the various advisory functions that can be performed, and gain knowledge about current bioethical controversies and how to manage them. 

The program can be completed in as little as two semesters or up to five semesters.

Master of Science in Computational Genomic Medicine

School of Medicine

The Master of Science in Computational Genomic Medicine program is ideal for students who want to prepare for genomics research and/or clinical genomic analyses in academic, hospital or industry settings. Students in this program will help address the growing gap between the rapid accumulation of genomics data and researchers' and clinicians’ ability to exploit these data effectively to improve human health. 

Through their coursework, students will gain fundamental background knowledge in genetics and genomics data and how to apply it in a hands-on setting. Instead of a thesis, students in this program will complete a culminating experience in their second year consisting of research in a lab at the School of Medicine or a partner institution.

Those who complete this program will be equipped with skills in bioinformatics and genomic data analytics that can be used in fields such as biomedical research, clinical care and public health. 

Minor in Data Science

Case School of Engineering

The Minor in Data Science provides a rigorous study of the data analysis lifecycle with a foundation of computer programming and statistics. Students who want to supplement their major domain with the knowledge and skills needed to manage and analyze large data sets should consider this minor.

Bachelor of Arts in Humanity and Technology

College of Arts and Sciences

Part of the Experimental Humanities Program, this major program is a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary program that facilitates the mutually transformative integration of humanities (including arts) fields with STEM fields through new and emerging technological tools and methods. 

Students in this major will have the opportunity to integrate their interests in science and technology with their interests in the humanities and arts by raising new kinds of questions and undertaking new lines of inquiry not available to humanists or scientists working in isolation. Ethical engagement and leadership development are embedded into student learning, as are opportunities for research and experiential learning. 

The major combines the interpretive, critically reflective tools of the humanities with the collaborative, experimental methods of the sciences, giving you the tools and experiences to design and develop new approaches, advance new understandings, and build new models of community and collaboration among the humanities, the arts, and STEM. In this way, the major prepares students to be a leader in addressing the world's most pressing issues at the interface of humanity and technology.

Minor in Nutrition and Metabolism

School of Medicine

This minor will equip students with the skills necessary to optimize health, understand the evidence behind gold standards related to manage metabolic processes, and advocate for effective dietary and food intake practices.

This minor program addresses the increased need for expertise in the field of nutrition and metabolic health, which can help prepare undergraduate students for careers in medicine, all aspects of healthcare, nutrition, public health, their own well-being and professional healthcare. This program will give students a comprehensive understanding of how nutrition impacts metabolic functions, including regulation and dysregulation, and the impact on health outcomes. 

Minor in Nutrition for Women and Children

School of Medicine

This minor program is designed for students interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the unique nutritional needs of women and children. It focuses on the critical role of nutrition in supporting growth, development and overall health across different life stages. Students will explore the impact of nutrition on reproductive health and aging as well as its impact on growth, development, and chronic disease prevention in children. Students will also have the opportunity to select elective courses that align with their interests in advancing their knowledge and skills in this specialized area.

Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science/Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence

College of Arts and Sciences (BA)

Students interested in pursuing studies in artificial intelligence have a few options. Offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, the Bachelor of Arts degree offers a less technical program that is rooted in the liberal arts. Students earning this degree can be employed as artificial intelligence or computing professionals. 

While students will explore the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and machine learning, they have the flexibility to incorporate a range of other academic disciplines. This program is particularly suitable for students who want to combine expertise in artificial intelligence with expertise in another discipline. For example, students can major in another discipline in addition to artificial intelligence and routinely complete all of the requirements for the double major in a four-year period, or students can major in artificial intelligence and take all of the pre-med courses in a four-year period. In addition to an excellent technical education, all students in the department have the opportunity to develop professional, leadership and creativity skills.

The Bachelor of Science program will give students a strong background in the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and machine learning. A graduate of this program will be able to determine when an artificial intelligence approach is appropriate for a given problem, identify appropriate representations and reasoning mechanisms, implement them, and evaluate them with respect to both performance and their broader societal impact, including potential risks. 

A graduate will be able to design and implement systems that are state-of-the-art solutions to a variety of problems that arise in artificial intelligence, including problems that are sufficiently complex to require the evaluation of design alternatives and engineering trade-offs. In addition to these program-specific objectives, students can use their technical and open electives to pursue interests in fundamental issues, knowledge representation and reasoning, machine learning, probabilistic representation and reasoning, planning and decision making, natural language processing, robotics, perception, and computer vision. All students atCase School of Engineering are exposed to societal issues, professionalism, and are provided opportunities to develop leadership skills.

Both degrees were designed according to the latest ACM/AAAI curriculum guidelines for the artificial intelligence area.

Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Biostatistics and Biomedical Analytics

School of Medicine

The graduate certificate provides a strong foundation in biostatistical methods along with hands-on experience in biomedical applications such as clinical trial design, data analysis, and modeling. This 15-credit-hour certificate is designed for graduate students, working professionals, and researchers, and offers a flexible elective structure supporting specialized training pathways in biostatistical methods, epidemiology and public health analytics, or biomedical data analytics.

The certificate is administered by the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences at the School of Medicine. Credits earned are transferable if needed. The certificate is issued through the School of Graduate Studies, and the coursework will appear on an official Case Western Reserve University transcript.

Bachelor of Arts in Data Science and Analytics

College of Arts and Sciences

This degree program is a combination of a liberal arts program and a data science major. Although it is less technical than the Bachelor of Science degree program in data science and analytics, it is a professional program in the sense that graduates can be employed as data science or computing professionals. 

The Bachelor of Arts degree program in data science and analytics provides students with foundational skills and experience needed to understand and handle large amounts of data to derive actionable information while also providing students flexibility to pursue a wide range of academic interests. The degree program is particularly suitable for students who want to combine data science with expertise in another discipline. For example, students can major in another discipline in addition to data science and routinely complete all of the requirements for the double major in a four-year period, or students can major in data science and take all of the pre-med courses in a four-year period. All students in the department are exposed to societal issues, ethics, professionalism, and have the opportunity to develop leadership and creativity skills.

Graduate Certificate in Global Medieval Studies

College of Arts and Sciences

This program takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Middle Ages. Administered through the Department of Art History and Art with collaborative participation from the Departments of Classics, Music, Modern Languages and Literatures, and English, the program provides graduate students with comprehensive, interdisciplinary training in medieval culture. 

The program is geared toward degree-seeking graduate students in any of the above-mentioned departments who wish to complete the certificate as a complement to their primary field of study. Enrollments are managed through standard departmental procedures in consultation with the program's director. The program fosters collaboration between departments, and leverages established partnerships with the Cleveland Museum of Art and existing performance ensembles.

Minor in Food is Medicine

School of Medicine

This minor addresses the critical need for specialized knowledge in using food-based interventions alongside typical health protective practices. This will help prepare undergraduates for careers in nutrition, food policy, public health, and professional healthcare. 

Graduates will gain expertise needed to contribute to innovations in health and wellness, advocate for food-based health solutions, and support diverse populations in achieving better health through their understanding of different human diets and dietary components. This will enhance students' competitiveness in numerous fields including medicine, community health, and public health government agencies.

Nutrition majors are not eligible for this minor.

Non-Nutrition majors may only take one minor offered by the Department of Nutrition.
