Celebrate book and paper arts with Octavofest events at Kelvin Smith Library

Kelvin Smith Library will host several events as part of Octavofest, an annual celebration of the book and paper arts during the month of October. This year’s events center on the theme of travel and are free and open to the public.

Around the World in 80 Books

From Monday, Oct. 7, to Friday, Nov. 29, the library will present an exhibit of 80 books and manuscripts from the library's Special Collections, University Archives and circulating collections that illustrate different perspectives on travel. The exhibit will take place during regular business hours in the Hatch Reading Room, located on the library's second floor.

Travel Journal Workshop & Presentation

On Saturday, Oct. 19, join artist Aimee Lee for a workshop to learn to create your own travel journals using fine art papers. Each participant will create variations of two different types of bindings. Materials needed to make the journals will be provided. Following the workshop, guest presenters Amy Kesegich and Jared Bendis will share their travel experiences and journals. The workshop will take place from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by the presentation from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshop and presentation are free to attend, but registration is required. Lee is an artist who works in paper, book and installation arts and researched Korean paper arts as a Fulbright fellow. She built the first Korean papermaking studio in North America in 2010 at the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland. Kesegich is a poet and current chair of the English, Communication, Modern Languages and Theatre Department at Notre Dame College. Her art journaling experiences began as a team-taught course on The Artist Journal, and since then, she has been chronicling her travels in a series of colorful journals. Bendis, creative new media officer at Kelvin Smith Library, is an award-winning installation artist, photographer, teacher, playwright and filmmaker.
