Celebrate International Education Week Nov. 16-20; see schedule highlights

The Center for International Affairs will celebrate International Education Week this week (Nov. 16-20) with a full schedule of events centered on a “Immigration: Beyond Borders” theme. International Education Week is a national celebration of the benefits of international education and global exchange. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education is an effort to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States. Monday, Nov. 16

Around the World: Kickoff Event

Tuesday, Nov. 17

The U.S. & Cuba: Can the Best of Enemies Kiss and Make Up?

2 p.m., Tomlinson Hall lobby

As the United States and Cuba forge a new path of diplomacy and cooperation, Ambassador (Ret.) Vicki Huddleston, chief of the U.S. Interests Section in Havana from 1999 to 2002 and a leading U.S. expert on U.S.-Cuban relations, will explore what is next for this historically turbulent relationship. Examining the economic, social and political implications, Huddleson will speak to what challenges await the U.S. as the doors to Cuba finally re-open.

Wednesday, Nov. 18

Open Borders? A student immigration policy panel

4-5 p.m., Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, Room 115

As policymakers and the American public debate what the government should do regarding the estimated 11.7 million undocumented immigrants in this country, Case Western Reserve students chime in. Join in and find out how the College Republicans, College Democrats, Students for Liberty and Students for Bernie Sanders stand on immigration policy. Listen to different sides explaining the pros and cons of paths to citizenship, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, border security and the economic impact of immigration.

Thursday, Nov. 19

Global Talk: Immigration and the Impact on Economic Innovation

Noon-1:30 p.m., Adelbert Hall’s Toepfer Room

Join a panel of experts as they discuss the history of immigration and refugee resettlement in the Cleveland area, what the current impact is and what the future may hold. John Grabowski, the Krieger-Muller Joint Professor in History, Richey Piiparinen, senior research associate at the College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University, and Hiroyuki Fujita, founder, president and CEO of Quality Electrodynamics, will discuss rich perspectives and immigrant stories. Center for International Affairs Strategic Plan Celebration

4-5 p.m., Tomlinson Hall lobby

In April 2015, the Case Western Reserve University Faculty Senate voted to endorse the International Affairs Strategic Plan, putting into motion changes to improve on the university’s international strengths. This plan is a vision to create an environment for students, faculty and staff that meets the challenges of internationalization.
