Celebrate the rededication of the McGaffin Carillon
STORY BY: EDITORIAL STAFF
The Friends of the McGaffin Carillon are celebrating with several free concerts this weekend after the completion of a major restoration and renovation to the carillon in the tower of The Church of the Covenant.
On Saturday September 13 at 3 p.m. Keiran Cantilina will perform two works commissioned for these concerts. The sections of these pieces are inspired by and honor various University Circle institutions. Meet the performer and composers at a reception following the concert.
On Sunday afternoon, September 14, at 2, Jon Lehrer from Michigan State will present a concert that highlights the four new bells that were added to the instrument. Meet the performer and learn more about the carillon at a pre-concert talk at 1pm in the chapel.
The McGaffin Carillon is one of only 185 cast-bell carillons in North America and one of the busiest. The 51 bronze bells weigh a total of 21,000 pounds and are played by a performer high in the tower. The audience is welcome to hear the concert from the lawn and campus areas around the tower.
Later this fall The Friends of the McGaffin Carillon will be launching a student carillon guild. Details to follow.
