He was honored for service to society through leading professional development activities for engineering faculty and other professionals from countries that have been experiencing conflict and/or infrastructure limitations.
Dan Lacks, the C. Benson Branch Professor and chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, received the Award for Service to Society from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
His work in this area has included:
- Hosting eight Iraqi scholars at Case Western Reserve as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program;
- Assisting with curriculum development, accreditation and improving faculty programs at the Yangon Technical Institute in Myanmar; and
- Facilitating leadership training, academic program development and networking opportunities to 25 Mandela Washington Fellows through the Young African Leaders Initiative.
