Cleveland’s fall colors forecast—and best spots to see them

October 07, 2025
STORY BY: ALAINA BARTEL

After a summerlike stretch that kept the canopy stubbornly green, cooler nights are finally on the way—and with them, the rush of autumn color. By mid-October, Northeast Ohio should be glowing at its peak, but the change happens fast once temperatures dip.

That means now’s the time to map out your leaf-peeping stops. We pulled together some of the best places in the Cleveland Metroparks where you’ll find not only brilliant fall backdrops, but also waterfalls, overlooks, lake views and trails worth lingering on.

If nights trend cooler as expected, color should build fast toward the usual mid-October peak; check the Ohio Department of Natural Resources fall foliage tracker before you go, and see where else you can view fall colors in Northeast Ohio

Bedford Reservation — Tinker’s Creek Gorge Scenic Overlook

A wide, wheelchair-accessible deck looks into a National Natural Landmark gorge (pictured above) carved by the park’s largest creek—great for seeing color layered across steep hillsides. Pair the overlook with a short walk from Overlook Lane Trailhead or a side trip to Bridal Veil Falls for moving-water photos. If you’ve got more time, Bedford’s deep forests feel like a continuous canopy in fall.

Brecksville Reservation — Chippewa Creek Gorge Overlook

Quick access off Route 82 puts you over a classic U-shaped valley where hemlocks stay green while maples and oaks turn. From the overlook, hop onto nearby Hemlock/All-Purpose trails or head to Oak Grove/Plateau picnic areas for a longer wander. Newer trails in this reservation also lead to fresh vantage points over the creek valley.

Garfield Park Reservation — Mill Creek Falls Overlook

Cuyahoga County’s tallest waterfall (48 feet) drops into a wooded ravine—easy leaf color plus a city-meets-nature vibe. Add a stroll through the reservation’s loops and picnic areas before or after your overlook stop. History fans: ranger-led walks sometimes cover how industry shaped this landscape.

Hinckley Reservation — Hinckley Lake Overlooks

Multiple pull-offs (including West Drive Scenic Overlook) frame shoreline color reflected on the lake—mornings can bring glassy water and light mist. If you want to stretch your legs, circle parts of the lake or head up to Whipp’s Ledges for sandstone, views and contrast against changing hardwoods. Facilities, picnic areas and the boathouse make this an easy half-day.

Mill Stream Run Reservation — Wallace and Baldwin Lakes

Low-effort, high-payoff color with shoreline reflections—great if you’re leaf-peeping between errands. Add the 18-station Physical Fitness Trail or a picnic at South Quarry for wildlife views over Baldwin Lake. This big reservation strings together trails, meadows and river corridors for longer drives or bikes.

North Chagrin Reservation — A.B. Williams Memorial Woods

A short, flat approach leads to an old-growth forest where 300- to 400-year-old beeches and maples glow under a high canopy—more “cathedral” than trail slog. Start at the nature center/trailhead for easy navigation and nearby paved paths. If you’re staying longer, North Chagrin layers in ponds, ravines and additional loops.

North Chagrin Reservation — Squire’s Castle

An 1890s stone gatehouse sits in a broad lawn ringed by forest—easy color plus an iconic photo backdrop. Picnic on the grass, then wander into the surrounding woods or down toward Oxbow Lagoon for more foliage and water. It’s a high-reward stop if you’re introducing visitors to the Metroparks.

Rocky River Reservation — Berea Falls Overlook and Fort Hill Stairs

At Berea Falls you get waterfall, rail bridges and textbook Berea sandstone ledges in one frame—excellent with color along the river. Then tackle the Fort Hill Stairs (155 steps) to a ridge 90 feet above the valley for a sweeping canopy view; the nature center/trails cluster nearby if you want more. This corridor also delivers easy pull-offs and short walks for tight schedules.
