Coleman P. Burke Center for Environmental Law hosts its third Junior Faculty Workshop at CWRU

This past June, Coleman P. Burke Center for Environmental Law at Case Western Reserve University hosted its third Junior Faculty Workshop for pre-tenured law faculty and fellows pursuing academic careers in environmental, energy, climate and natural resources law.

Seven junior scholars were selected based on their works in progress, prior accomplishments, and future promise. This year’s participants included:

  • Sarah M. Everhart (Widener University Delaware Law School)
  • Kayla Landeros (Baylor University School of Law)
  • Amanda Leon (University of Michigan Law School)
  • Gabriel L. Levine (New York University Institute for Policy Integrity)
  • Anna A. Mance (Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law)
  • Andrew Stawasz (University of Michigan Law School)
  • Rachel Westrate (Vermont Law and Graduate School)

At the Junior Faculty Workshop, each scholar presented their work and received detailed feedback from distinguished senior faculty in environmental and energy law, including:

  • Jonathan Adler, founding director of CWRU’s Coleman P. Burke Center for Environmental Law and the Cabell Research Professor and Tazewell Taylor Professor of Law at William & Mary Law School;
  • Victor Flatt, Coleman P. Burke Chair in Environmental Law and associate director of the Burke Center for Environmental Law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law;
  • Wendy Wagner, Richard Dale Endowed Chair in Law and professor at University of Texas School of Law;
  • Felix Mormann, professor at Texas A&M University School of Law; and
  • Robin Kundis Craig, Robert A. Schroeder Distinguished Professor of Law at University of Kansas School of Law.

The workshop combined traditional scholarly critique with professional development discussions focused on career trajectory, publication placement and teaching strategies. Key topics addressed during the workshop included the:

  • Future of NEPA
  • Historical development of the Clean Air Act
  • Implementation of benefit-cost analysis
  • Federalism parallels in international environmental law
  • Environmental implications of AI data center expansion

The first two iterations of the Junior Faculty Workshop have already helped generate high-quality scholarship placed in leading journals, such as the Harvard Environmental Law Review, Utah Law Review, NYU Environmental Law Review, and Alabama Law Review, among others. The in-person gathering commenced with a dinner on the evening of June 9.

Established in 2019 through a generous gift from CWRU alumnus Coleman P. Burke, Coleman P. Burke Environmental Law Center continues to foster robust student education and national policy discussions in environmental law.
