Computer and data sciences’ Vipin Chaudhary receives NSF award
Vipin Chaudhary, PhD, chair of the Department of Computer and Data Sciences at Case School of Engineering, received a $600,000 National Science Foundation award for the project “Elements: ForteFAI - Trustworthy AI Cyberinfrastructure for Guardrailing Multimodal Foundation Models and Cyberinfrastructure.”
Chaudhary is the principal investigator on the project, which focuses on strengthening the reliability of artificial intelligence systems used as cyberinfrastructure for science and engineering.
According to the project abstract, ForteFAI will provide a unified framework for detecting distributional anomalies across vision, language and cyberinfrastructure domains. The project will develop open, production-ready software to improve quality control for scientific imaging, enhance safeguards for large language model workflows and enable anomaly detection in high-performance computing operations.
The project also advances trustworthy artificial intelligence through FORTE—Finding Outliers with Representation Typicality Estimation—a model-agnostic methodology for identifying unreliable inputs before they affect downstream analyses.
