CWRU creates an Emeriti Academy

Case Western Reserve University recently launched an Emeriti Academy to foster closer continuing relationships with emeriti faculty after they retire from full-time employment. Sara Berry, Academy Professor and Professor Emeritus of History at Johns Hopkins University, will speak at an inaugural event for the Emeriti Academy Tuesday, April 19, at 1 p.m. in the Tinkham Veale University Center, ballroom B. Berry will share her insights on the role of emeriti academies, their impact on the campus community and national trends in this area. The goals of the Emeriti Academy are to:

• Maintain emeriti faculty connections to the university;
• Provide continuing opportunities for learning and scholarly dialogue;
• Support continued academic engagement and scholarly activity among emeriti; and
• Provide opportunities for service to the university, community and larger society.

The CWRU Emeriti Academy is the brainchild of three Distinguished University Professors: Merle (Terry) Hokenstad, the Ralph S. and Dorothy P. Schmitt Professor; Sandra Russ, the Louis D. Beaumont University Professor; and Alan Rocke, the Henry Eldridge Bourne Professor of History. The Emeriti Academy will be administered through the Office of Emeriti Affairs in the Office of the Provost, and is open to all faculty who have emeritus status at the university. An Emeriti Academy Executive Committee has been formed and is in the process of creating an organizational structure for the group. Rocke will serve initially as the chair of the committee. Members of the executive committee are:

• College of Arts and Sciences: David Farrell, professor emeritus of physics; Alan Rocke, Distinguished University Professor and the Henry Eldridge Bourne Professor of History
• School of Medicine: Stephen Zyzanski, professor emeritus of family medicine and community health; and Ulrich Hopfer, professor emeritus of physiology and biophysics
• The Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences: John Yankey, the Leonard M. Mayo Professor Emeritus of Family and Child Welfare
• Case School of Engineering: Jay Mann, professor emeritus of chemical engineering
• School of Dental Medicine: James Simmelink, associate professor emeritus of restorative dentistry
• School of Law: Robert Lawry, professor emeritus of law
• Weatherhead School of Management: Bo Carlsson, professor emeritus of economics
• School of Nursing: May Wykle, professor emerita of nursing
• Distinguished University Professors: Merle (Terry) Hokenstad and Sandra Russ
