CWRU hosts Ohio Latin Americanist Conference Feb. 27-28

Idelber Avelar
The Ohio Latin Americanist Conference will take place at the School of Law's Gund Hall Feb. 27-28, bringing together scholars and students from all over Ohio and neighboring states who share an interest in Latin American issues. Idelber Avelar, professor at Tulane University, will give a keynote address on protests in Brazil and the recolonization of the Amazon. Avelar is the author of The Letter of Violence: Essays on Narrative, Ethics, and Politics (2004) and The Untimely Present: Postdictatorial Latin American Fiction and the Task of Mourning (1999). The conference will also feature a roundtable on the new status of the Cuba-US relations, with scholars that flew directly from Cuba. On Saturday, three Latin American poets—Roger Santiváñez from Perú, Diego Mora from Costa Rica and Cristián Gómez Olivares from Chile—will participate in a poetry reading. All the events are free and open to the public. For a full schedule of events, including event times, visit sites.google.com/a/case.edu/olac-2015/.
