CWRU Professor Wynshaw-Boris elected to the National Academy of Medicine
Each year, up to 90 distinguished professionals in health and medicine from the U.S. are recognized for their contributions to the field by being elected to join the National Academy of Medicine, an esteemed organization that provides advice to improve medicine and biomedical science by addressing health issues on national and international levels. Tony Wynshaw-Boris, MD, PhD (MED ’87, ’84), the James H. Jewell MD ’34 Professor of Genetics in the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and a pediatric geneticist at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, is one of the new members elected in 2025, as announced by the academy on Oct. 20.
Wynshaw-Boris is being recognized by the academy for advancing research on the pathophysiology of developmental neurogenetic disorders such as ataxia telangiectasia, lissencephalies, and autism; identifying targets for potential new therapies through the creative use of animal models and induced pluripotent stem cells; and demonstrating an outstanding commitment to service, particularly in the area of genetics policy.
“Being elected to the National Academy of Medicine is a tremendous honor,” he shared, “and is a testament to the outstanding postdoctoral researchers and students who have worked in my lab as well as the collaborators that I have been fortunate to work with.”
Wynshaw-Boris is a Cleveland native and Case Western Reserve alum who was recruited back to the university in 2013 when he was hired as chair of the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences, which he helped rebuild and grow. In addition to his research, he has been committed to mentoring the next generation of physicians and scientists.
“I was fortunate to have a terrific graduate mentor, Dr. Richard Hanson, a former chair of the Department of Biochemistry and a National Academy of Medicine member, ” said Wynshaw-Boris. “I am grateful for my medical and graduate education at CWRU.”
